Special Friday Night Gig with Duke Special and David Ford. 
In a rare Friday night Waiting for Sunday special the two rising stars that are Duke Special and David Ford are to perform in an up close and personal music hall spectacular.
Each of the performers are currently making a big impact with their unique styles, talents and record releases. Duke Special, who was supporting Van Morrison in concert for two dates last week, has been nominated in the best album category of the Choice Music Prize - the irish equivallent of the Mercury Prize. (He may yet win it - the award ceremony takes place in Dublin on Feb 28th.) David Ford is currently play-listed on Capital FM with his single - I don't care what you call me which was released this week. Inventive, melodic and timeless, David Ford's songs showcase him as a true original. Formerly of glam-rockers Easyworld, he's now pursuing a solo career with all the restless passion you could hope for. Magic in a Van
Now. Luke's asked me to do a review of the very special Waiting for SundayFriday gig with David Ford and Duke Special. Unfortunately I had one too many organic beers + organic cigarettes that evening and can't remember a great deal so I'll be adopting a gonzo style. Don't despair though as the fan boys + girls have provided an exhaustive set list replete, as all good lists should be, with italics + square brackets. In fact I think I'll do this review in list format as a mark of respect.
Things I remember from that night:
- The bands turning up with barely a chance to tune up + sound check at all, making the set-list + printing lyrics for covers off th'internet as they went.
- The music being astounding from start to finish. A wonderful set with David, Duke + everyone else playing their (+ others') timeless songs in the perfect intimate setting; as if they'd been The Waiting Room house band for 20 years + still loved it.
- Thinking 'what a bunch of obscenely talented + charming people. Makes me sick.'
- Being gutted that I couldn't record a bootleg. Blame me + this eBay vendor.
- Setting up half-decent shots on Dave's camcorder just before another player steps in to provide some accompaniment. Bah.
- Sharon from next door giving Peter Duke Special the knackered, old piano accordion she'd always refused to give anyone else + him accompanying David Ford on 'Young Hearts Run Free'. What a touch of class. And is it just me, or is music that bit more affecting when it's slightly out of tune?
- Last but not least, the amazing DJ Gav, quite literally playing records one after the other. Often with less than a 2 minute gap between them. Believe.
